Healing Power of Touch: Transform Lives with Therapeutic Therapy

The power of nurturing and healing touch

Touch is the most important experience from the moment of birth. Touch is how a baby communicates its needs, bonds with its caregivers and explores its environment.

Have you wondered about the healing power that touch has? We clearly see and appreciate how lovingly babies, puppies, kittens and most mammals respond to touch. Essentially, words are not even necessary when touch can express feelings and empathy in intimate connections. In humans, the skin has sensory receptors that transmit information to the brain. Through these receptors we are able to discern between safe and unsafe touch.

Even before birth, when in the womb, touch is the first sense that a baby develops, starting from the first trimester, the foetus senses its safe space and its connection with its mother when she touches and strokes her abdomen. The foetus actually responds by reaching and touching the uterus wall when the mother is contacting her belly… An attuned mother is aware of the foetus, senses it’s heartbeat, kicks and every movement and constantly communicates with the unborn baby, speaks with it in gentle, soothing words, and expressing her love and joy.

When a baby is born, the first sense that it experiences is touch. Touch is the most important experience from the moment of birth. Touch is how a baby communicates its needs, bonds with its caregivers and explores its environment. Touch is vital for a baby’s physical, emotional and cognitive development. From birth to three years, a baby depends on its caregiver/parent to regulate its nervous system. Attuned moms know just by hearing their cries, if the baby requires to be changed, fed, rocked to sleep etc. Touch is vital for the development of a healthy immune system!

Tactile stimulation, according to researchers, reduces stress level in the infant as well as the mother (Neu, Laudenslager, & Robinson, 2008).

Often, when there is misattunement or when the caregivers/parents are unavailable physically or emotionally during early development, it has a negative impact on the child and continues to disrupt their functioning even as an adult. These patterns keep repeating over and over again…

A knowing, attuned, nurturing and therapeutic touch from a touch therapist helps repair the ill effects and damages caused due to negligence or abuse. Therapeutic touch like Transforming Touch® helps restore regulation and builds resilience in the nervous system. There are several touch based modalities like craniosacral therapy, neuroaffective touch, somatic resilience and regulation Transforming Touch® etc.

Transforming Touch® (Transforming the Experience Based Brain) is a very effective, regulation-focused modality in treating complex or developmental trauma. This modality was developed by Dr. Stephen J. Terrell, one of the pioneers in the field of developmental psychology. This is an exceptionally distinct way of working with clients increase resilience, restore and support their nervous system regulation. Everyone can benefit from this somatic approach regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or race. With Transforming Touch®, one employs a light touch at various locations in the body. Permission is sought before making contact.

Dr Terrell will reaffirm that we have a somatic memory in the soma (body),that does not forget anything. “Our cognitive memory, in our brain, remembers important events and when things look dangerous or scary, it may  block it out and may not be available to us”.

In sessions, we pay attention and listen from our hearts to the client’s narrative as well as to their body’s story without pathologizing. We bring in presence and offer support to the client to expand their ‘Window of Tolerance’ (capacity) and thereby help expand their opportunities and possibilities in their journey of transformation (healing journey).
