Neha's Journey: Balancing Dreams and Family Business

Homebound and happy: Rediscovering roots, fulfilling dreams

Neha hadn't spoken to her family in a long time, weighed down by guilt over the arguments she’d had with them.

That Neha would take over the family business, was something no one ever gave a second thought to. Her parents were confident that after their retirement, Neha would run the family eatery in Sampaje, a small village in Karnataka. But Neha had always dreamt a different life for herself, away from such small-town monotony. She had other dreams—she wanted to explore the opportunities of city life, particularly in Bangalore, where she hoped to build a career.

However, even after living in Bangalore for an entire year, things hadn’t gone as planned and hoped for Neha. She was struggling with her job and found herself missing home more than she had anticipated. The initial thrill of city life had faded, leaving her feeling uncertain about her decision to move away. She hadn’t spoken to her family in a very long time, weighed down by her guilt over the many arguments she’d had with them regarding her reluctance to join the family business.

One evening, as Neha returned from another challenging day at work, she was surprised to find her mother and brother waiting outside her apartment. She rushed to her mother’s arms, tears streaming down her face.

“Ma, I miss home so much,” Neha choked between sobs. Her mother held her tightly, whispering, “We miss you too, beta. ”

Later, relieved from all the tears shed, the trio sat down in Neha’s living room. Her brother said, “Neha, we want you to know that we support you, no matter what. And we can see it’s been hard for you here.”

Amidst fresh sobs, Neha confessed, “Yes, I regret leaving. I miss Sampaje, I miss all of you.”

Her mother stroked her hair tenderly. “There’s no need for regrets, Neha. You followed your dreams and we are proud of you no matter what. Just remember, you have a home where you are always welcome.”

Feeling a wave of relief wash over her, Neha realised that their support was unwavering. She understood now that she didn’t have to choose between her dreams and her family’s love; they would always be her anchor, whether in a bustling city or in the quiet streets of Sampaje.

Her mother and brother went on to spend a few days in Bangalore. Together, they explored the city, visited local attractions and shared delicious meals, both home cooked and gourmet. Neha cherished every moment, realising how much she had missed their warmth and companionship.

One evening, over dinner, Neha looked at her mother and took a deep breath, her heart feeling lighter than it had in months. “Ma, I’ve been thinking a lot. I realise now that running our family business in Sampaje isn’t just about duty, it’s about continuing what you and Dad have built with so much love. So, I’ve decided to resign from my job here. I want to come back home.”

Her mother reached across the table to hold Neha’s hand, her eyes shining with pride. “Oh, dear child. You don’t know how much this means to us.”

Neha cried happy tears, feeling a sense of peace she hadn’t felt in a long time. “I’ll be back in a month, Ma. I want to learn everything about the eatery and make you both proud by succeeding.”

Happy and at peace, the family sat together, discussing her return and the future of their business. Neha knew she had made the right decision. She realised that home wasn’t just a place, it was where her heart felt happy, surrounded by the love and support of her family.

And now, she was homebound to actualise her life’s dream, one that she shared with her family.
