A Gift of Adventure: Rekindling Dreams at 40

A gift of adventure and dreams

Vikram blinked. There was no sign of Nalini's luggage. "Wait a minute," he said. "Nalini, where’s your bag?”

Vikram arrived home from work earlier than usual. He had been looking forward to his yearly trip, where he and his dear wife, Nalini, would go on a holiday for two weeks, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

“Nalini, I’m home!” he called out as soon as he stepped inside. Nalini appeared with a warm smile. “Hi, you’re back! How was your day?” she asked.

“It was good, I had a long meeting with the boss. Oh, and hopefully when I am back from the holiday, we will have a new team member. Aah, never mind! Enough about work! Are you ready for our trip?” Vikram asked, his voice full of excitement.

Nalini smiled. “Of course, everything’s ready!” She pointed towards the living room, where one large bag was neatly packed, sitting by the couch.

Vikram blinked. There was no sign of Nalini’s luggage. “Wait a minute,” he said. “Nalini, where’s your bag?” Nalini pointed to their dressing table with a smile.

On it, were the tickets. “The ticket says Dharamshala, Himachal? I thought we were going to Rajasthan!” Vikram said, surprised.

Nalini laughed softly. “Well, there’s been a little change of plans. You’re going alone this time.”

Vikram was thoroughly confused by now. “What? I’m going alone?”

“I’ve booked a special holiday for you, Vikram. You are going to Bir Billing, Himachal Pradesh. I’ve already arranged everything; a month-long paragliding training course with Mr Manpreet, a seasoned and renowned paraglider. And you will be staying at the Little Dew Homestay that overlooks the Dhauladhar Range,” Nalini explained.

“But why?”

Nalini had always known of Vikram’s dream of learning to paraglide. When they were younger, he would often mention how much he loved the idea of soaring through the skies. But responsibilities and the limited availability of training schools had held him back. Over time, his passion for it seemed to fade in the face of daily life. But Nalini never forgot the spark in his eyes whenever he spoke of paragliding. Even though the topic wasn’t brought up much lately, she knew it was something he still deeply cared about.

“Vikram, I appreciate everything you do. Really, you work so hard. But I also know that you love paragliding and had wanted to learn it once. So, this time, it’s your turn to do something that is just for you. You’ve put my happiness first many times. Now, I want you to pursue your passion. We can go on a holiday together next summer. But for now, it’s time to become a paraglider!”

Vikram was speechless. “But Nalini, I’m 40 now, does it really matter anymore?”

Nalini smiled. “Vikram, age is just a number. It’s never too late. You’ve always worked so hard, now it’s time to reconnect with that old passion of yours. And don’t worry about me. I promise that next time, I’ll be there.”

Vikram’s eyes started to well up, touched by her thoughtfulness. “Thank you, Nalini. I’ve always wanted to learn paragliding and you have finally made it happen. To be honest, I had forgotten what it felt like to do something new. But now, I am feeling excited already!”

Nalini took his hands in hers. “I know you are going to love it, dear. Plus, you can talk to your boss. I’m sure he’ll let you work from home while you’re there. You can practice paragliding regularly and enjoy the place too. It’s the perfect opportunity.”

Vikram felt a wave of gratitude towards his life partner. “Yes, I’ll opt for work from home. Thank you, Nalini. I couldn’t have asked for a better gift.”

“Go ahead, then. You deserve this.”

This trip, though unexpected, was a chance to pursue something Vikram had always wanted to do. And it was all because of Nalini, his best friend who hadn’t given up on his dream even when he had.
