Career Change at 50? Neha's Inspiring Journey from Tech to Food

From coding to cuisine, Neha’s brave lil journey

"But quitting now, at almost 50? It doesn’t seem like a smart move, career-wise," Neha replied, shaking her head. “I need to find something that I am truly passionate about.”

Neha had been working as a computer engineer for over 25 years and she had enjoyed coding for as long as she could remember. She was loved and appreciated by everyone at work and home, but lately, she felt something amiss.

One evening, sitting at the dinner table with her husband, she sighed heavily. “Ajay, I don’t know what’s wrong, I am no longer finding that joy I used to. I just feel so unfulfilled and lost. Work isn’t what it used to be for me.”

Ajay looked at her with concern. “If you’re so unhappy, maybe you should consider leaving,” he suggested gently.

“But quitting now to do what, and that too at almost 50? It doesn’t seem like a smart move career-wise,” Neha replied, her voice thick with worry. “I need to find something that excites me, like coding once did.”

“What does excite you lately? Is it teaching kids to code? Or cooking, maybe? We all know how much you like feeding your family and friends. Oh, the weekend is almost here”, Ajay rambled between thoughts.

Neha always looked forward to the weekends. It was almost like a ritual for her and Ajay to host lunches for friends. Their weekends were filled with laughter, great conversations, delicious food and wine. These gatherings were a highlight of their week and the joy they brought was something Neha cherished.

That Saturday, their home was buzzing with guests and in that lively atmosphere, Neha decided to share her feelings with her friends. “Something just doesn’t click anymore,” Neha confessed. “I feel like I need a change, but leaving my job at this stage seems risky.”

Her friends listened patiently, offering various suggestions and encouragement. Seema, one of her closest friends, said something that sounded familiar. “Hey, you love hosting guests and cooking amazing food. Why don’t you try opening a cloud kitchen?”

Neha’s looked intrigued. “A cloud kitchen?” she echoed.

“Yeah, a cloud kitchen allows you to cook and cater without the challenges of a full restaurant. And no one I know cooks better biryani than you,” Seema almost squealed in excitement. Others too, nodded in agreement.

That night, Neha and Ajay wondered how they hadn’t seen it themselves. “I think it’s a brilliant idea, Neha. But, let’s start by doing our homework right,” Ajay said.

They spent several days researching about cloud kitchens, understanding logistics, challenges and their local market’s demand. Neha’s enthusiasm grew with each passing day.

Finally, she decided to take the big plunge—Neha handed in her resignation and explained her decision to her boss. He was initially upset but knew she had true talent when it came to food. “You will be dearly missed here, Neha. Anyway, be rest assured that I’ll be your first customer. All the very best,” he smiled and shook her hand.

Having taken a huge risk at 50 years of age, Neha knew she had to keep moving ahead with grit and hope. She brushed aside the dark thoughts of failure that often assailed her and got to work setting up the cloud kitchen. The first order, a plate of biryani, came from her boss, a man true to his promise. And he confirmed it was a delicious plate, priced just right!

Neha’s risk and hard work had paid off. The whole transition hadn’t been easy, especially in the first few months. But she was thrilled and felt child-like excitement run through her veins daily. She was finally doing something that made her truly happy in this phase of her life. And the support of her loved ones truly made the journey worthwhile.
