She stood on the balcony of her room at dusk, listening to the chirping of birds returning to their nests to feed their young. The darkness was slowly engulfing the area like the cloud of thoughts haunting her. She wanted to break the shackles of monotony and do something that opened the door to her soul and let her free. The more restless she grew, the stronger her desire to dance became. True, she had tried and failed many times. But she wasn’t the one to give up.
She was up before sunrise and practised her dance for the nth time. Clad in her costume, she was geared up to take the test that would confirm her entrance into the prestigious dance school in town. Scared but undeterred, she danced to win. The instructor had his doubts but gave in to her sheer determination. The three-year journey was not a cakewalk but her indomitable spirit never let her give up. She had vowed to be the best dancer the school had ever seen.
When the graduation day dawned, her ethereal dance left the audience spellbound. She swayed to the tune of the song like a flower does in a soft breeze. Her moves mesmerised and penetrating gaze held the audience spellbound. The stage belonged to her and her nimble footwork and agile gait illuminated it like the sun lights up the sky.
Bowing to the thunder of applause that refused to die down in the jam-packed auditorium, she recollected her struggles and sacrifices. Her eyes were moist as a triumphant smile lit up her face.
Little did anyone realise that this epitome of grace couldn’t see them. That she was born blind.
