“Today is going to be a good day,” Sam was ready for his big day at work. Before leaving, he gave a final glance to make sure he had everything. Presentation files. Check. Car keys. Check. Confidence. Double-check.
But as he stepped out, Sam heard a scream. It came from the parking lot, one storey below. He rushed downstairs frantically and saw his neighbour, Ravi, lying unconscious on the floor. Worried, he quickly checked his pulse. He was alive. Sam lifted him in his arms, carried him to his car, and drove to the nearest hospital.
At the hospital, Sam completed all the formalities before calling his brother Praveen. “Ravi is admitted at the Devi hospital. Come as soon as you can.”
Sam was sitting in the waiting area, with his hands covering his face. Thinking about the presentation, Sam looked at his watch in dismay. I won’t make it on time, he thought. He took out his phone and informed the office about the incident.
An hour later, Praveen came rushing to the reception. Petrified, he asked, “My brother is here. His name is Ravi Kumar. Can you please check?”
Before the receptionist could answer, he felt a tap on his shoulder. “Hi, Praveen. He had a concussion but he is okay now. I just spoke to the doctors. He is resting,” Sam told him.
“Thank you, Sam,” he embraced him. “Thank God, you were there.”
“No problem, man. He’s like a brother to me too,” Sam responded with a smile.
“You look exhausted. Go home and rest. You have done so much for us already,” Praveen insisted.
“Okay. Let me know if you need anything. I am just a call away,” Sam said and left the hospital.
Tired, he reached home and sat down on the sofa. What a day, he thought and fell asleep in the living room itself.
The next day, Sam lacked his usual vigour. However, he checked his emails and found that his presentation was moved to the next week. He was delighted to know his hard work didn’t go down the drain.
He ate his breakfast and got ready for work. As he sat in his car, his phone buzzed. It was a picture of Praveen and Ravi smiling. The caption read, “Thank you, Sam. You’re a good man.”
Sam leaned back, closed his eyes, and whispered. “Today is going to be a good day.”
