As a travel enthusiast, I have always been fascinated by the idea of exploring offbeat destinations. Many people like to visit places frequented by tourists because they want to be sure of the attractions they will find. But I prefer the exploration of the lesser known. So when I first heard about Pachmarhi hill station, I knew I had to visit. Located in Madhya Pradesh, India, Pachmarhi is a hidden gem that offers a plethora of unconventional adventures for the thrill-seekers. From trekking untouched trails to kayaking and rafting in the Satpuras, Pachmarhi has it all.
This picturesque hill station located in Madhya Pradesh is known for its lush green forests, breathtaking waterfalls and stunning viewpoints. The town is surrounded by several tourist spots including the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also home to several ancient caves that date back to the 6th century. Overall, it is a perfect destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. I had a great time in this unique little town in the heart of India and here are some of Pachmarhi’s best-kept secrets that are perfect for the wanderer in you.
Explore the untouched trails
If exploring untouched trails is something that you enjoy, then Pachmarhi is the place to visit. It has several trails that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys and the best way to explore these trails is by trekking. An exhilarating and rewarding experience, trekking will allow you to discover the beauty of this place and get close to nature in a unique way.
One of the most popular trekking routes is the Dhupgarh Trail, the highest point in Madhya Pradesh. The trail took me through dense forests and a rocky terrain but the view from the top was, simply put, magical. One can also trek to Handi Khoh, a deep valley that is surrounded by lush forests and waterfalls, or head to the Rajat Prapat Trail in the Narmadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh – it takes you to a stunning waterfall that is over 100 feet tall. The trail is relatively easy and can be completed in a few hours.
Stunning view atop Chauragarh hill
Chauragarh Hill is one of the highest peaks of Pachmarhi. You can trek the hill and also visit the Chauragarh temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is believed to have been built by the rulers of the Gond dynasty in the 17th century. Situated at an altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level, one has to climb a whopping 1,300 steps to reach the temple! Although the climb is challenging, the view from the top is every step worth it. As I climbed higher to get to the temple, I could feel the cool breeze and hear the sound of the waterfalls. The massive greenery around the temple added to the beauty of the place.
The Chauragarh hill is truly a must-visit destination for those who enjoy trekking. It is also ideal for those interested in the cultural history of Madhya Pradesh.
Kayaking and rafting in the Satpuras
If you are in the mood to unwind via something unique yet thrilling, Pachmarhi offers great water sports activities such as kayaking and rafting. My entire plan to visit Pachmarhi actually began from my discovery of the many rapids and gorges that exist across the Satpuras. While kayaking allowed me to explore the local flora and fauna, it also gave me a rush of adrenaline as I paddled through its lovely waters.
Rafting is another popular activity that is conducted on the Denwa River, known for its rapids. This too brings in tons adventure enthusiasts up for a thrilling experience.
Buzzing of water at the Bee Falls
One of the coolest places in Pachmarhi is the Bee Falls, also known as Jamuna Prapat. The waterfall is a three-tiered cascade with the water falling down a series of rocky steps and creating a refreshing pool at the base. It is situated amidst dense forests and can only be reached by a short trek through the woods. The name “Bee Falls” comes from the buzzing sound of bees that can be heard around the falls. Interesting, isn’t it?
The trek to Bee Falls takes one through a picturesque trail surrounded by the forest and the sound of chirping birds. The area around the waterfall is a popular spot for picnics and nature walks.
Relish local food and soak in the culture
Pachmarhi is home to several local delicacies that are worth trying from Madhya Pradesh. The town is known for its street food like chaat, samosas and jalebis. One can also try the local cuisine which includes dal bafla, a popular dish made of lentils and wheat. The dish is typically served with ghee and is a staple in the local cuisine.
Apart from the food, Pachmarhi is also known for its rich culture. The town is home to several ancient temples and caves that date back to the 6th century. Top most in the must-see list is the Pandav Caves which are believed to be carved by the Pandavas during their exile. The town also has several ancient temples, including the Jata Shankar Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The best time to visit Pachmarhi is between October and June. The weather during this time is pleasant, making it ideal for outdoor activities.
My trip to Pachmarhi was one of the most soul satisfying ones in life, as I got back to the city rejuvenated and excited for things to come. The destination not just fulfilled the adventurer in me but also helped me gain fresh perspective through its natural beauty and architectural wonders.
