Essential Pet Care for Senior Dogs

Woof with love as they age: Here’s how to take care of your senior furry friends

Pets offer us unconditional love, care and joy and it’s our responsibility to care for them with the same devotion they show us.

“Animals are such agreeable friends – they ask no questions; they pass no criticisms.” — George Eliot. In this quote, English novelist Eliot captures the essence of what makes pets so special: their unconditional love. Pets give us unconditional love, offer us companionship, never judge us and  ask for nothing in return. Whenever I look back on my life, some of the happiest moments are related to the pets I’ve been blessed with. Being an introvert with extreme social anxiety, I have often found joy and true friendship in their company. They’ve been my friends, sharing my celebrations and my struggles. My dog, Julius Caesar, who is now 12 years old, is my best friend, a constant source of love. Whenever I’m feeling low, he gently places his paw on my hand or his little snout on my lap, offering the kind of care and assurance only a true friend can. His kindness never fails to lift my spirits.

Pets go above and beyond when they bring so much love and joy into our lives. They offer support and are there with us during our challenging times. So, it is our responsibility to care for them with the same devotion they show us. As pets age, you may notice them having difficulty walking or their energy levels dropping. You might find them sleeping for long hours. These changes can be difficult and painful  to watch, but it’s important to remember that they need our care and attention especially at this point in life. Regular vet check-ups, a comfortable space, a healthy diet and exercise can help improve their quality of life as they age.

National Pet Day is dedicated to honoring the wonderful pets in our lives. It is celebrated on April 11th and it raises awareness about important issues such as pet adoption, proper care and the need to support animal shelters and rescue organisations. On this special day, join us as we explore pet care tips to help keep them healthy and happy as they age.

Ensure a healthy and balanced diet

As a Labrador guardian, I can tell you firsthand how much they love their treats and snacks. For them, everything from burgers to your couch is food! There has never been a day in the past 12 years that I’ve had a bagel or a bun without sharing it with Caesar. Although it is endearing, we must remember that as  pets grow older, we must be extra careful about what they eat. They may still ask for their favorite treats, but their bodies can no longer handle certain foods the way they used to.

As pets age, their nutritional needs change too. Senior pets require a balanced diet with the right amount of protein, vitamins and minerals. Ensuring that they have a specially formulated diet to meet these needs is crucial for their health. You can consult with your vet to understand the best food for your pet based on their age and health conditions and make sure they are getting the right nutrition.

Exercise their body and mind

For humans, exercising has a number of benefits; it improves our mood, health and keeps us stay fit. Exercising is just as important for our pets as it is for us. It helps keep their bodies healthy, their muscles strong and their energy levels balanced. Although senior pets may not have the same energy as when they were younger, it’s still important that we encourage regular, light exercise. Taking them on short walks can keep their muscles strong and also help with mobility. So, make sure to dedicate a few minutes each day to play with them as it also helps keep their mind sharp and engaged.

Monitor mobility and joint health

My dog, Julius Caesar, has always slept on my bed and his spot has always been at the edge by my feet. Recently, however, he has had trouble climbing onto the bed. Mobility issues and joint pain has become increasingly common.

Most senior dogs suffer from arthritis and joint pain, which makes it difficult for them to walk, climb stairs and play. You can help your pet with their mobility and joint health by providing a comfortable bed, non-slip rugs and ramps to assist them in getting on bed or into the car. You can also consult your vet for joint supplements or medications to help ease their pain and improve their quality of life.

Dental and oral care is a must

If you think plaque and tartar are issues only humans face, think again. Your pets are just as prone to these dental problems. If left unchecked, this buildup can lead to gum diseases and even tooth loss. In serious cases, poor oral hygiene can even contribute to liver or kidney problems. To help prevent this, regular dental care is essential. Brushing your pet’s teeth regularly, providing them with dental chews and scheduling dental cleanings with your vet can help maintain your pet’s dental health.

Schedule regular vet check-ups

One of the best ways to detect diseases early in your pets is through regular vet visits. Just like the elderly, senior pets too need regular check-ups to detect any health issues in advance. Vet visits become even more important as pets age because they are more susceptible to conditions like arthritis, diabetes and kidney disease. Regular check-ups can help your vet recommend the right treatment or lifestyle change for the pet’s wellbeing.

Caring for a senior pet definitely requires extra attention and dedication. By focusing on simple pet care tips such as regular vet visits, a balanced diet, gentle exercise, joint care and dental hygiene, you can help your pet enhance their wellbeing and enjoy their golden years to the fullest. These pets give us years of love and companionship so we should also shower them with the best care possible.
